Nancy Brewer, the wife of Special Agent John Brewer, stood in the mirror, eyes misting over slightly. It had been nearly 10 years since she first brought up the topic of retirement to her husband. At the time, they still lived in Ohio and she thought there was a real possibility that she had convinced him.

Instead, John decided to take a promotion in Charlotte, North Carolina that had him leading the FBI field office. The fury that boiled under her skin when he announced his decision took months to get over. He knew how she felt about him accepting the position behind her back, one that meant they would need to uproot their lives.

They say love can endure all things, and it was her love for him that kept her by his side. Eight years later, she had to admit that it wasn't all bad.

She had him home for dinner more than she did when he was in the Ohio field office. His disposition changed to a much more cheerful one after they made the move. In part because of the exciting cases his team encountered, and ultimately solved. Not to mention, the amazing weather.

Unlike Ohio, and likely other portions of the Midwest, you didn't deal with gray skies from September to April. There was sun and lots of it. The temperature in the winter rarely dropped below 30, and when it did, it was only for a day or two.

Although there were some positives to their move south, Nancy was happy to see retirement at last. As a surprise, she had been squirreling away some of their disposable income for the last year. She saved enough to purchase them round-trip tickets to Hawaii where they would stay at a resort for seven days.

She planned to give him the surprise when they returned home, where she secretly hoped he would repay her with a little bedroom action. The thought brought a smile to her face. For now, she would bask in the knowledge that he was leaving behind the chaotic world of the FBI and that he would be safe by her side until they were old and gray. Make that grayer, she mused.

She left the bathroom, walking back into their bedroom. Upon seeing her husband, she couldn’t help but to whistle, “Phwwwwwhhht, phwoooooh!”

Brewer turned around fussing with his tie. She continued, “Look at that handsome man there. Is it possible I can get your number?”

“Sorry, ma’am. I’m taken by a woman who would make us both disappear if she knew I was even looking at you.”

“Lucky girl,” she said, saddling up close to him. “But I’m sure she won’t mind if I plant a kiss on your cheek.” She leaned in, kissed him on the cheek, and then backed away with a smile.

“That’s it, you’ve doomed us both now.” They shared a laugh.

She moved his hands away from the tie, “After all these years, you would think you’d learn how to tie a knot correctly.” She undid his effort, adjusted the lengths and began the Windsor knot motions she’d perfected over the years.
